“Yes We Can”

by Mark Boyer | February 04, 2008

Finally, a campaign song that sounds good and has the ability to inspire (and that isn’t by Willie Nelson). The song, “Yes We Can,” is a mashup of quotes from Barack Obama speeches that are sung by will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and his celebrity friends. Through most of the video, will.i.am sings in unison with Obama, both of whom are shown in split-screen, and will.i.am is substituted throughout by his special guests, who include Scarlett Johansson, John Legend, Herbie Hancock, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Adam Rodriquez, Kelly Hu, and Amber Valetta, among others. The video was directed by Jesse Dylon and premiered on ABCNewsNow’s “What’s the Buzz” on Friday.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any all-star celebrity-filled music videos, and this is the first to my mind that actually works (although it drags in the middle). Come to think of it, this is the first song the Black Eyed Peas have done since Fergie joined the group that hasn’t made me feel either embarrassed or depressed (or both). Maybe they should stick with the “We Are the World”-style stump songs.

Amazing articles - ha!

Certainly a clever approach, in terms of syncing up singers and Barack’s speech. I only wish everything I said could be put to music by will.i.am. Oh that’d be so sweet.

On another note, how many parody videos will be posted on YouTube by this time tomorrow? If nothing else, I hope Obama Girl does her rendition of the video, and soon.

WORD.

This is so interesting - especially being so far from the political action over there. I am definitely impressed and also wondering if Hillary has anything this cool up her sleeve…

[…] will.i.am original was pretty good (if a bit creepy after a few views), but this parody featuring excerpts from John […]
